Writing and Spirit: Retreat for the Creative Soul           To purchase

"As writers, we can feel as though when we're writing, we're stealing time away
from somebody or something. This retreat ‘decriminalized' us."
Patti Rae Tomarelli, Boston, MA

Sunset on Jenness Pond
  Thursday, Oct. 7-
Sunday, Oct. 10
The partnership between our inner life and our creative expression benefits immeasurably when we offer it the gifts of time and retreat.

Steeped in a pleasing natural setting, removed from the countless distractions in a day, and a life, these minimally structured days (all activities optional) afford creating souls lots of time with their work while immersed in New England’s autumn beauty and the companionship of others devoting time and focus to creative efforts.

Participants are encouraged to bring work-in-progress, or projects they wish to initiate, and plan to spend most of the session hours drawing on the rich inner and outer inspiration evoked in the spirit of a retreat atmosphere.

Facilitator Phyllis Ring, author of several nonfiction works, including a collection of essays, Life at First Sight: Finding the Divine in the Details, also writes fiction. Her work has appeared in such publications as Christian Science Monitor, Ms., SageWoman, Writer’s Digest, and Yankee. She has worked as an editor, as instructor for the Long Ridge Writers Group of the Institute of Children’s Literature, lived and worked in Europe and China, and facilitates workshops for soulful writers and investigating souls.

Headed into the retreat,
I set myself a goal: To get
through an impasse in my first
draft. Not only did I meet that
goal, I was astonishingly
pleased to find myself
finish the first draft.
Jane Harper, Eliot, ME

Actor and Writer Paul Bellefeuille, Kingston, NH
 “Coming together brought
a united spirit of working
toward a common goal —
to inspire one another
and to discover what
makes us do our best
work. The option of
sharing progress at the
end of the day helped
feed that spirited
feeling.”
Paul Bellefeuille,
Kingston, NH

“I liked the communal commitment we all brought
to writing. There were no distractions, I was well-fed,
and when I did venture
from my room, I saw other writers writing. Facilitator
Phyllis Ring created a cozy, inviting atmosphere that led me into the writing process."
Kathy Gilman,
Keene, NH

I enjoyed both the periods
of solitude and of interaction
… The diversity among the small group was striking,
and broadening. Two things,
in particular, I appreciated:
My first reading of a scene
from my attempt at a novel, which was positively received; and the selection of books on writing that Phyllis Ring brought, which allowed me to preview titles that I plan to
add to my resources."
Robert Cederquist,
Poughkeepsie, NY
